A Year in the Garden
To garden is to witness change. Change that can feel like it’s moving at a snail’s pace, or change that seemingly happens over night. On March 29, 2024, I began a practice of photographing my garden every day. Sometimes in the morning, sometimes the evening, usually not in the middle of the day when the sun is too bright. My rule is I can take any number of pictures but it has to be at least one. Some days I think I am too tired to photograph and tell myself, "You only have to take one photo,” and what often happens on those days is that I end up so fascinated by what is happening with a certain plant or the light or a color combination, that I find myself shooting many.
Today is April 18, 2024, and already the changes in the garden have been amazing to me. We’ve had lots of rain and temperatures can still feel like winter at times, but spring is pushing through and her colors are starting to show. I plan to continue this practice until March 28, 2025.
A note about the photos: They are ordered by date and I will be adding new photos every week. They are not highly edited, color corrected, or retouched at this point. They are rough prints so to speak, and will eventually be refined.
